In surfing the web in my semi-regular ritual to locate new and improved tools that will help people to optimize their imagery, I came across a free program today called RIOT (Radical Image Optimization Tool). Modestly self-described as “A free program designed to efficiently optimize images for the Web” on their home page, RIOT is designed to handle .jpg, .gif and .png imagery with a GUI that is somewhat similar to a simplified Adobe Fireworks type of product.

In my testing of the product against the results of other programs that I have currently been using, I haven’t been able to achieve the same optimization levels using the RIOT tool. Optimizing .png files, in particular, hasn’t quite measured up to to the results I am able to achieve using the PNGSlim tool. However, that might simply be a bit of “operator error” on my part, as I’ve barely begun to scratch the surface on using that tool…diving into all of its advanced features and settings. Related to .png files in particular though, it is next to impossible to beat PNGSlim, in my own experience.

If anyone else out there has any experience with RIOT or if Lucian Sabo (the tool’s author) wanted to weigh-in with a comment or two, I would love to hear from you!

Hi, thanks for your article about RIOT.
You will find that the results are similar to those of commercial products, if used properly. RIOT does not provide yet a PNG multipass optimizer. That’s why the compression for PNG is lower than using special designed programs such as optipng or pngout.
Future plans include a png multipass optimizer, ability to choose transparent regions and much more.
    This program will evolve.

The upcoming version (0.2.1) will be available in a few months and will contain interesting interface changes.

Many SEO companies claim that the SEO process can generate profitable traffic. I do not agree to this statement because I think that the issue is far more comprehensive and needs expertise from other professionals, persons who known more than merely the IT business
